Flexible workplaces a low carbon solution for Australian cities

Flexible workplaces a low carbon solution for Australian cities With climate strikes taking place all around the world this week, and hundreds of Australian businesses now pledging to participate, the conversation around what we can do collectively as a society to reduce our carbon emissions and mitigate climate change is becoming widespread.   Many solutions are already here. But in many areas, we have to be smarter at joining the dots. What often isn’t discussed is how businesses who embrace flexibility are in a unique position to help employees reduce their carbon emissions on a large scale. More specifically, adopting agile working environments with flexible remote working as standard has a huge knock-on effect in terms of reducing our individual and corporate carbon footprints. Transport is now Australia’s third largest source of carbon emissions with the highest rate of growth. Cars are responsible for roughly half of Australia’s transport emissions, emitting about the same as Queensland’s entire electricity supply. With our population projected to grow by 24% to reach 31.4 million by 2034, the pressure this will place on our metropolitan transport networks is immense. A recent Infrastructure Australia audit report found the cost of congested roads and over-crowded public transport systems will double unless governments do more to boost investment in transport projects. Yet congestion is already an unpleasant and stressful reality for millions of commuters each day with average commute times increasing in almost every capital city and state across Australia. According to the latest annual Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey, commute times have risen by 23% since 2002 with commuters in Sydney facing the most arduous journeys to and from work. So, what would happen if we were all able to work from home, or just closer to home, for some of our working hours? At a micro level, recent research by Swinburne University of Technology’s Smart Cities Research Institute found that 64% of Melbourne’s city workers are already working remotely on average 1.1 days per week. And interestingly only 2% said none of their work could be performed at an alternative location. The research then found that if these employees increased their remote working days to five days a fortnight, this would cut the number of daily commuters to Melbourne from 572,000 to 440,500 a day. And if the remaining 36% of city workers were also able to work remotely 50% of the time, daily commuter numbers would fall further to around 337,500, a total reduction of 41%. Commute times have risen by 23% since 2002 with commuters in Sydney facing the most arduous journeys to and from work. A shift to widespread remote working could therefore take thousands of cars off the road, easing congestion and reducing the average employee’s carbon footprint significantly. And at the same time, improve productivity, our quality of life and the liveability of our cities and regional centres. But it’s not just about increasing the number of remote working days per employee. Flexible start and finish times are also an important way in which employers can help move towards a low carbon future. Our recent FlexCareers Annual Workplace Flexibility Report 2019 found that flexible start and finish times are now one of the most common flexible working policies adopted by progressive employers. Not only does this policy provide flexibility to those who need to juggle family and other personal commitments, but it also has a significant impact on flattening out peak hour transport curves. For those who drive, the benefits of avoiding peak hour traffic are obvious. An additional outcome is that starting or finishing work outside of peak hour also makes public transport much more appealing. Not only is it cheaper to travel off peak, especially with Sydney’s Opal card system, but you’re more likely to get a seat. A more comfortable and efficient public transport system encourages more uptake, reduces congestion on our road networks and ultimately reduces per capita carbon emissions. Although it’s early days, employers are realising that encouraging remote working has a huge impact on reducing carbon emissions and achieving sustainability goals. And in a more humanised world of work where the younger generations are drawn towards businesses with purpose, employers need to start measuring and articulating the environmental benefits of their flexibility frameworks to remain competitive. Why Men Have Stronger Professional Networks Than Women

Why Men Have Stronger Professional Networks Than Women Why Men Have Stronger Professional Networks Than Women Exploration shows that the discriminatory constraint is firm. Furthermore, the motivation behind why may shock you. It's not your sex, it's your network. It's been about 50 years since the Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned sexual discrimination.Further enactment has been passed to uncover chauvinist corporate-advancement rehearses and support assorted variety in the work environment. Womens' gatherings have campaigned organizations and organizations to help and guide female workers, and private undertakings have supported and developed projects to advance the headway of ladies to the most elevated ranks. But in 2009 ladies hold only 20 percent of the senior administration positions in American organizations, as indicated by the 2009 International Business Report by Grant Thornton. The discriminatory constraint remains solidly, imperceptibly, in place. But what is answerable for the undetectable hindrance that permits bosses to offer empty talk to decent variety however elevate men to 80 p ercent of the senior administration positions?New research recommends that less ladies arrive at those occupations than men since they are less inclined to find out about accessible situations from associates as right on time as their male counterparts. Both people will in general flow the uplifting news about employment opportunities or openings when they catch wind of them. Be that as it may, taking a gander at the nature of the activity leads regarding pay and esteem … ladies get more unfortunate quality leads from other ladies, said Lisa Torres, a George Washington University human science teacher who examines the recruiting and quest for new employment process in partnerships. Men will in general be in the top situations in associations in this way, fundamentally, they're in a situation to find out about employment opportunities or openings when they show up, and circle those to their networks.Birds of a quill rush together. The issue isn't a disappointment in the vocation impr ovement or quest for new employment astuteness of prepared female experts and absolutely not an announcement on the nature of the applicants, Torres said. It has more to do with the individuals with whom people feel most good partner, she said.Torres and Matt L. Huffman, human science specialist at the University of California-Irvine, considered gatherings of people and followed enumeration information to distinguish designs in the manner the genders organize. The specialists nitty gritty their discoveries in a recent report, Informal organizations and Job Search Outcomes Among Male and Female Professional, Technical, and Managerial Workers, distributed in Sociological Focus. They found that the two people will in general form systems involving individuals of their own sex - a procedure referred to experimentally as homophily and conversationally as similar people are attracted to eachother. But ladies will in general perceive the inclination and attempt to beat it - developing syste ms made of around 50 percent men - while men's systems included not very many ladies, Torres said.According to Torres' and Huffman's hypothesis of long range informal communication: Because men hold 80 percent of the employments in senior administration (a figure that has been consistently declining), they are bound to find out about employment opportunities at the senior-administration level. Men give the news to their for the most part male informal organizations, and all things considered, news about the employment opportunity arrives at ladies simply after it has reached and passed a few men.Who is in your network? It isn't simply an issue of being associated, said William Bielby, an educator emeritus of human science at the University of Illinois at Chicago. It makes a difference who those associations are.Bielby is a main scientist in race and sex predisposition. He has been called upon as a specialist observer in sexual-separation and inclination claims including WalMart, FedE x, and Johnson. Bielby said the expert systems ladies manufacture neglect to convey a similar activity leads as men in view of whom they decide to include.Research into how people structure proficient connections at work demonstrates that ladies will in general be increasingly successful at systems administration - in any event to the extent the size and cohesiveness of their expert systems are concerned, Bielby said. In any case, that expansiveness despite everything doesn't beat the convergence of intensity in male networks.Women have would in general be better associated by and large, however they and a significant number of their female contacts will in general work in increasingly female-commanded occupations, Bielby said. So their systems might be more extensive however not reach to as high a level as men's, who will in general be better associated, especially in getting proficient news, to all the more high-status people.Access is just piece of the issue, Torres said. The res t is a frequently oblivious choice about who is the most suitable objective for a tip.You may enlighten a male partner regarding an open door that is popularity or includes a ton of voyaging, she stated, however not a female companion since you realize she has family worries that may make that more difficult. That may show affectability toward an associate's very own circumstance, yet not one that permits that associate to make up her own brain about whether the activity is too high pressure or the movement prerequisites are excessively incredible, Bielby said.Gender biasWhile men hold 80 percent of senior administration occupations, the hole in salary is less extreme. As per Huffman's survey of 2000 registration information, ladies in senior administration procure pay rates that trail men's by just 9 percent. The holes endure most quite in access and recognition, Torres said. For model, in innovation organizations - which, as budgetary administrations, will in general be male overwhel med - men are 2.7 occasions as prone to be elevated to top specialized or administrative situations than ladies; they are undeniably bound to be seen as skillful; and are multiple times as liable to have an accomplice who assumes the main part of obligation regarding home and family, as indicated by a recent report via Caroline Simard, chief of examination at the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology.A third of ladies in innovation organizations purposely delay having youngsters to seek after vocation objectives, and unquestionably a larger number of ladies than men are probably going to accept broadened work days and an absence of rest are important to make progress, the investigation concluded.Even without sexual orientation inclination, the more noteworthy number of associations men need to more significant level contacts cause it almost certain they'll to catch wind of a specific open door than even a lady with a similar foundation and comparative contacts, Torres said.A nd the higher up the stepping stool an applicant goes the more probable oblivious predisposition about race, sex or competency is to barge in on the dynamic procedure, Bielby said - particularly in something as casual as an occupation reference.Passing on an occupation lead is at last an activity in abstract judgment, Bielby said. So when somebody is pondering a chance - and that choice is frequently made unknowingly in only a brief moment - it might be generalizations of what men or ladies are equipped that makes you pretty much slanted to advise a particular person. We like to believe we're past those days where generalizations matter, however we're not that far expelled from it, Bielby said. I would say during money related administrations case, for instance, even with intermediaries who work just on commission, you'd think there couldn't be any inclination there in light of the fact that the numbers recount to the story. Be that as it may, the main problems were not the commissio n equation, it was in the delicate choices made about how disperse leads or referrals and the records of individuals who leave.Farther down the stepping stool, it's simpler to measure levels of execution, Torres said.As you get higher, the decisions perpetually get increasingly emotional. That is one explanation there is still a serious compensation hole among people in comparable employments, she said. As you get higher on the stepping stool, work execution depends more on assessment and abstract task. A lady legal counselor may deal with more cases, however would they say they are the enormous cases? I may deliver more as an information specialist, however is the thing that you produce extremely first level contrasted with somebody else?Trying to enact or sort out employment references to kill sexual orientation inclination is certifiably not a smart thought, Torres and Bielby concurred. That would simply crush the procedure altogether.Overcoming the sexual orientation networkIf l adies need to rise to the viability of male informal communities, they have to imitate the men in those systems, said Torres. On the off chance that male-overwhelmed proficient systems are passing occupations prompts other men before ladies, ladies should place themselves in the way of those leads, Bielby said. Ladies must include more men - particularly high-status men - to their expert systems. Moreover, they have to make their inclinations and abilities as clear as could be expected under the circumstances, he said. The fundamental knowledge about how employment leads are passed along, which has been around for a considerable length of time, is that they come through 'frail ties' - associates or companions of companions, who we don't really realize that well, Bielby said. At the point when you go along work lead, regularly that depends more on presumptions about somebody you just know ambiguously than anything explicit about them. What you can do, he included, is concrete that asso ciation by catching up with explicit data about what sort of employment you're searching for or sending a resume or connection to a Web page with that data.
